This Class has been Canceled

This is a classroom only session, which meets the pre-requisite for attending the Emergency Vehicle Operator simulator sessions being planned for 2018

Course Goal- This program was developed to assist law enforcement personnel in safely operating their vehicle.  During the program, students will be made aware of practical, effective techniques to minimize their risk of becoming involved in a collision.

Instructional Objectives-  At the completion of this program, students will be able to:

·         Identify typical law enforcement driving patterns

·         Identify pre-operational and post-operational vehicle inspection requirements

·         Identify the benefits of using vehicle restraint devices

·         Identify accident avoidance techniques

·         Identify various mechanical, weather, environmental and other hazards applicable to the typical law enforcement driving experience

·         Identify the hazards associated with distracted driving

·         Identify the benefits of using the S.I.P.D.E. method of vehicle operation

·         Identify braking and acceleration techniques

·         Identify the inherent hazards in operating a vehicle in emergency mode and during pursuit situations

Officers should be aware of the seriousness of law enforcement driving.  Because officers spend so much of their career operating a motor vehicle, they must understand the importance of remaining proficient in their driving skills and knowledgeable in the areas of civil and criminal liability.

This course will cover vehicle safety, officer safety, accident avoidance, liability issues and the laws pertaining to operating a vehicle in response to an emergency. Above all, it is important for each officer to remember – SAFETY TAKES PRECEDENCE OVER EVERYTHING ELSE.
