40 hr. Lead Homicide Investigator-DeKalb

C O U R S E  P U R P O S E:

This program has been approved by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board to meet the 40-hour course requirements of Illinois Public Act 96-111 (SB 3491) for a training program in death and homicide investigation for law enforcement officers of local government agencies. Illinois Officers completing this training program will be issued a certificate by the State and may be assigned as lead investigators in such investigations.

This comprehensive seminar for lead homicide investigators provides instruction in investigating and prosecuting death cases from the start of the investigation through evidence collection, autopsy, suspect interviews, press conferences, trial testimony and ultimately conviction. It is purposely designed to provide expert “in-the-field” instruction from the “Side of the Badge to the Side of the Scalpel to the Side of the Gavel.”

From rookie first responders all the way to the seasoned investigator, this course will provide a wealth of knowledge and information. Lead investigators develop a sense of what their ultimate objective and goals are within the crime scene, and how to recognize what forensic application would be appropriate based on the evaluation of each scene. The subject matter of this course falls with the key training guidelines for the in-service training requirements for Lead Homicide Investigator.

C O U R S E   D E S C R I P T I O N

This course covers the types of techniques necessary to manage investigations of death and homicide cases from initial crime scene examination through autopsy, suspect interviews and successful prosecution. The program includes an in-depth review of a diverse combination of homicide cases, and provides strategic tactics in the apprehension and prosecution of the offender(s).

This seminar provides the investigator with the tools necessary to conduct death and homicide investigations. Using actual investigations, participants work through cases from the moment of arrival until its conclusion.  This program offers tips, techniques and methods to successfully close cases.

Discussion topics include talking about the mental state of a suspect and how it impacts the solvability of a homicide, the differences between how homicides were previously investigated and solved, versus today's investigations and how technological advances have expedited this process.
