COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 Illinois SFST Refresher (8-hours)

 

Intended Audience

The SFST Refresher Training is for law enforcement officers at the Federal, State, county, and

local level who have successfully completed the NHTSA/IACP-approved DWI Detection and

Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Training Program. This course satisfies the Illinois

Department of Transportation Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Grant

requirement of having an SFST refresher every four years from the date of their last completed

certified training.

 

Purpose of the Training

The primary purpose the SFST Refresher Training Program is to improve the overall consistency

of administration of the SFSTs by individual police officers. Officers can refresh their skills with:

• Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn, One Leg Stand

• Additional testing procedures

• Toxicology protocols

• DUI Report writing skills

• Case law update

• Understanding the warning to motorists

• Common DUI Defense techniques/court testimony

• Processing the DUI arrest

 

Officers will receive access to the dynamicimpairment.com Field Resource Database which

contains DUI flowcharts, FAQs, sample reports, reference documents, NHTSA research

documents, and more. This database can be accessed by officers on any device that has

internet access. It is password protected. Officers will receive the DUI processing pocketbook.

 

David Christiansen and Ari Briskman are Standardized Field Sobriety Instructors and Drug

Recognition Expert Instructors. Together, they have instructed thousands of officers throughout

all of Illinois on impaired driving courses including Standardized Field Sobriety Testing,

Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement, Drug Recognition Expert, SFST/DRE

Instructor and other courses. David and Ari are both certified Traffic Crash Reconstructionists.

Jennifer Cifaldi is the Illinois Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutor. Jennifer formerly served as an

Assistant State’s Attorney with the Adams County State’s Attorney’s Office where she

developed their DUI search warrant program. Jennifer also developed the Illinois Law

Enforcement Phlebotomy Program which has been successfully implemented by many law

enforcement agencies in Illinois. She has trained over a thousand officers and state’s attorneys

on various impaired driving topics.
