Northwest Illinois Law Enforcement Executives Association’s (NWILEEA) Winter Retreat

COURSE CONTENT:  This course will provide an accurate account of the events surrounding the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri following the shooting of Michael Brown on August 9th, 2014.

Tom Jackson was police chief in Ferguson when Michael Brown died and during the subsequent months of unrest and rioting. Tom will outline what really happened while the national media were telling a different story.

Tom will describe the many positive relationships he had established with Ferguson citizens and leaders – and talk about dealing with the national media, out-of-town protesters, protesters, and the Department of Justice. He learned some lessons in those months, particularly about “optics” and social media.

Attendees will hear about the lessons learned by law enforcement during the civil unrest and the impact it had on law enforcement officers. Tom will share information on the steps taken to support officers and minimize the physical and emotional impact these events had on officers and their families.

Tom will tell the inside story of what happened in Ferguson and how good guys became the bad guys through media and political distortion.
