This Class has been Reshceduled to September 5-6, 2018

The first day of this class includes an SFST refresher

COURSE CONTENT:  The ARIDE curriculum is designed to be delivered as a stand-alone, 16-hour course. The ultimate goal is to train law enforcement officers to observe, identify and articulate the signs of impairment related to drugs, alcohol or a combination of both in order to reduce the number of impaired driving incidents, serious injury, and fatal crashes. This course is designed for law enforcement officers who have completed NHTSA/IACP National Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Program Standards.

The ARIDE’s subject matter relates to two NHTSA/IACP curriculums, the “Standardized Field Sobriety Testing” and the "Drug Evaluation and Classification Program, Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Training". The participant should be fully conversant with the procedural "mechanics" of HGN with the three clues of HGN and with the interpretation of those clues for assessing alcohol impairment. A major focus of this course is on the examination of a drug-impaired suspect's eyes.

The law enforcement officer will also be trained to conduct additional tests including Lack of Convergence, Modified Romberg Balance and Measuring Pupil Sizes. The law enforcement officer will become more familiar with the DECP program and its functions. This will facilitate better communication and transfer of critical roadside indicators of impairment to the evaluating DRE officer for a more complete and accurate assessment of the impairment.

Participants attending this training will be required to complete a SFST proficiency exam. Completion of the proficiency exam will satisfy the IDOT requirement for SFST Refresher Training. It will also aid the participant in applying for future DRE classes.
