Urban tracking deployments for canine teams make up nearly 90 percent of all tracking deployments for many municipal police departments.

Most people think handling a tracking dog simply means holding on to the line and just following the dog. In fact, completing a successful track is the result of 75% proper handling and 25% good dog work.

Tracking dogs need to deal with extreme distractions (i.e. dogs barking on the other side of a fence, cats in back yards, kids following along). The dogs also learn to deal with much smaller scent pictures, more cross tracks, and extreme cover changes.

Tracking in an urban environment can prove difficult for the dog and Canine teams should practice navigating these obstacles in realistic scenarios. The hard surfaces, fences, road crossing, distractions and heavy contamination make the tracking environment more challenging with handlers having a lesser degree of success.
