- The first portion of this class begins in the classroom.
- The second portion is a hands-on practical in which participants will have to drive an emergency vehicle through numerous maneuvers in a controlled environment.
Course Description- This 4-hour Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) is designed for police officers who operate emergency vehicles. This course can be used as initial training for emergency vehicle operators to learn strategies to safely operate emergency vehicles in emergency and non-emergency situations, or as refresher course for experienced emergency vehicle drivers.
Students will learn & simulate safe driving practices, defensive driving principles, the responsibilities of an emergency vehicle driver, how to safely operate emergency vehicles during emergency responses, and the difficulties of driving in high stress situations.
The Improper/careless operation of an emergency vehicle can be considered “Deadly Force” and the “unreasonable Use of Force” could lead to constitutional violations and direct liability to the officers and agency. Current laws governing the operation of emergency vehicles will be reviewed.
The ultimate goal is to reduce highway crashes thus reducing the human and monetary costs associated with them.
- Students must bring a department owned vehicle comparable to what is operated when on duty. One vehicle per every two students from the same agency
- Students must have a valid driver’s license to attend this training.
- Students must wear suitable clothing, such as long pants (no shorts or skirts), a comfortable shirt (with sleeves) and sturdy shoes. Athletic shoes are acceptable. No sandals, high heels, or open toe shoes are allowed.
Prerequisite- All students must be in excellent physical condition and free of any prior injuries that may be aggravated by intensive vehicle weight transfer, braking, turning or skidding.
