This course has been appoved to meet the following ILETSB Mandates:

Legal Update (1 Hour)

Use of Force (1 Hour)

Use of Force De-Escalation Techniques (12 Hours 4 Hours scenerio based)

Use of Force Officer Saftey techniques (26 Hours 5 Hours Scenerio based)

 

Day 1 - Officers must qualify on their 1st attempt of the 50 round course to remain in the class

This is not a learn to shoot class, it is a learn to coach & teach course.

Class Dates: May 11-15, 2026

 

Course Content: Through lecture, demonstration and practical exercises, the Firearms instructor will have the knowledge and ability to do the following:

Be well versed in the use of “Deadly Force”                       Instruct basic marksmanship skills

Instruct firearms safety                                                        Operate a range safely

Instruct gun handling skills                                                  Maintain firearms training records

Conduct firearms training / qualification for all officers

 

Topics will include:

Nomenclature & weapons maintenance                 Basic gun handling skills

Modern technique: Grip-Stance-Sight alignment   Malfunction drills, Tac load, Shot analysis

Use of Force                                                             Shoot positions

Low light shooting techniques                                 Combat shooting & moving, speed drills

Rifle familiarization                                                  Instructor development

 

The student will be expected to pass a written examination (70%), present a block of instruction to fellow students, and shoot a qualification score of 80% or better on the (50) rd. State of Illinois course of fire.

The proposed Instructor must be able to effectively teach/present an assigned topic during this class

 

Students will need the following equipment:

Eye and Ear protection (mandatory)                        Duty handgun - 3 magazines and gun belt

500 rounds handgun ammunition                              20 rounds, .223 ammunition (gun not provided)

Flashlight

 

Required paperwork to enroll in the course

No later than 7 days prior to the start of class, MTU1 must have received a:

  •  “Course Enrollment” form
  •  Signed Indemnification Agreement
  •  Proof of Liability Coverage (Certificate of Liability Insurance from agency)
