COURSE CONTENT: During criminal investigations officers may need to serve a search warrant or make an exigent entry at a location where the interior layout is unknown. When the target structure’s layout is unknown, Officer safety is compromised and the probability of evidence being destroyed rises.  When serving warrants, Officers need to know where to go upon entry so they can quickly secure the occupants and prevent the loss of evidence.

Officers will be trained to recognize how the interior of a structure may be laid out, by identifying the common outside characteristics of structures. These features can generally identify where bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms and other areas of a home are located.

Officers will participate in case studies before going hands-on outside of the classroom, where they will practice documenting structures to identify the likely interior layouts.

Officers should bring clothing adequate for the outside weather that day, along with a pencil and notepad for sketching.
