COURSE CONTENT: 

The Illinois Department of Transportation, with support of various emergency response agencies and groups, has established a statewide Traffic Incident Management Training Program. This 4-hour course includes participants from all disciplines involved in incident management and is the first multi-disciplinary class of its kind in Illinois. The goal is to provide responders with information and best practices that improve their safety at highway incident scenes.

• Dangers encountered by emergency responders working in or near traffic

• Traffic Incident management fundamentals

• Principle Laws that relate to responder safety

• Notifications and Scene “Size-up”

• Safe Vehicle Positioning “Move it” and “‘Work It”

• Scene Safety and avoiding the Zero Buffer

• Incident Command Systems and responsibilities

• Traffic management and Advance Warning Areas

• Special Circumstances (Vehicle fire, HazMat, Vehicle fluid spills, etc…)

• Clearance strategies and Scene Termination
