High Risk Traffic Stop Course

 

Course Goal                                      Discuss objectives for class.                           

History                                               Discuss previous tactics such as “The V”                               

                                                            And lessons learned from them.

Case Law                                           Discuss Laws that allow us to remove                                   

                                                            Individuals from the vehicle.

Driver: Pennsylvania V. Mimms

                                                            Passengers: Maryland V. Wilson

Proximity                                           Discuss how distance gives time and                        

                                                             Cover from suspect(s) in vehicle.

Cover                                                  Show where modern engineering in                         

                                                            Vehicles have changed points of cover.

Officers’ responsibility                    Discuss each officer’s position and the areas of responsibility for each position.

Removing Subjects                          Discuss the commands that will be given and          

                                                            The paths subjects will take as they exit the vehicle.

Safety                                                 Make sure no one has real firearms                         

                                                            Or other weapons on their person.     

TEACHING PRACTICAL EXERCISES AND SCENARIOS                                                                      

EACH STUDENT OFFICER WILL PERFORM THE ROLE OF:

  • OFFICER IN POSITION ONE - INCLUDING VERBAL COMMANDS AND COORDINATION

  • OFFICER IN POSITION TWO - INCLUDING VERBAL COMMANDS AND COORDINATION

  • OFFICER IN POSITION THREE - INCLUDING VERBAL COMMANDS AND COORDINATION

  • OFFICER IN POSIITON FOUR - INCLUDING VERBAL COMMANDS AND COORDINATION

  • SUSPECT IN VEHICLE, AND:

  • WILL DEMONSTRATE PROPER INSTRUCTION METHODS FOR EACH OF THE ABOVE.

This course has been approved by ILETSB to meet the following mandates:

High Risk Traffic Stop - 6 Hours/4.5 Hours Scenario Based

De-Escalation Techniques - .5 Hours/.5 Hours Scenario Based

Laws Concerning Stops, Searches & Use of Force - .5 Hours

Ofc. Safety Techniques - .5 Hours

Constitutional/Proper Use of LE Authority - .5 Hours
