PURPOSE OF COURSE: The purpose of this course is to equip corrections officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to handle situations where force may be required to maintain order, ensure safety, and manage conflicts within the correctional facility.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This four-hour block of instruction centers around the theory and application of reasonable force for local corrections officers in Illinois. It includes instruction and discussion on an officer's authority to use force, federal and state law, Illinois Administrative Code, and agency policy. Instruction and discussion are also conducted regarding the proper and required documentation of uses of force. The information in this course is based on the Law Enforcement Officer's Use of Force in Illinois and Corrections Officer's Use of Force in Illinois manuals developed by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
GOALS:
• Identify the two types of force used in controlling resistive behavior
• Identify the authority by which a correctional officer may use of force in Illinois
• Identify federal guiding use of force standards
• Identify federal and state limitations on the use of force
• Identify the levels of resistance often encountered from suspects
• Identify the force options available to counter resistance
• Identify the variables that affect the use of force
• Identify the variables that affect the use of force
• Identify principles and requirements regarding the accurate and effective reporting of use of force incidents
