COURSE CONTENT:
This 8-hour course is a combination of SFST Refresher Training and Introduction to Drugged Driving. This will serve as a refresher for participants that have already completed Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE). This course satisfies the Illinois Department of Transportation Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Grant requirement of having an SFST refresher every four years from the date of their last completed certified training. Additional focus is placed on Illinois specific DUI laws, case law, and the administrative code.
Participants will also receive a legal update including processing an arrested driver, warning to motorists, toxicology sampling protocols, laboratory reports, and search warrants. The Illinois Statutes and recent court decisions impacting DUI are covered.
Every officer in the course will receive access to the latest digital resources on the Dynamic Impairment LLC website including flow charts, sample reports for a variety of situations, cheat sheets, research studies, case law and more.
This course is taught by DRE Instructors under the control and approval of the Illinois DRE/SFST Program State Coordinator.
Course Topics:
• Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn, One Leg Stand tests
• Lack of Convergence, Pupil Size, Modified Romberg Balance, and Finger to Nose tests
• The seven drug categories
• Toxicology protocols
• Processing the DUI arrest
• Understanding the warning to motorist
• DUI Report writing skills
• Case law update
• Common DUI Defense techniques/court testimony
Course Objectives:
Session 1: Introduction and Overview
Session 2: Vehicle in Motion and Personal Contact
Session 3: Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Review
Session 4: Proficiency and Examination
Session 5: Drugged Driving
Option A: Processing the DUI arrest
Option B: Overcoming impaired driving defenses
Option C: DUI legal update
Instructional Techniques:
Digital presentation (PowerPoint) of the topics will be used. The PowerPoint slides are synced to the 2018 SFST Refresher Manual and Introduction to Drugged Driving. Multiple videos of police investigations are incorporated. Officers will participate in four hands-on role-playing exercises of the various field sobriety tests.
Method of Evaluation:
Participants will conduct an SFST Proficiency test. Participants will take a written examination containing 20 multiple choice questions with a minimum passing score of 80%.

Civil Rights (4 hours with 1 hour of hands-on scenario based)
Constitutional and Proper Use of Law Enforcement Authority (1 hours)
Law Updates (3 hours)
