Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC)

This course has been approved to meet the following ILETSB mandates:

Procedural Justice ( 1.5 Hours)

Emergency Medical Response (5 Hours with 5 Hours scenerio based)

Use of Force Officer Saftey (1.5 Hours with 1.5 Hours scenereo based)

This 8-hour course covers topics designed to decrease preventable death in the tactical situation.

Topics include hemorrhage control; surgical airway control and needle decompression; strategies for treating wounded responders in threatening environments; caring for pediatric patients; and techniques for dragging and carrying victims to safety.

TECC delineates care for patients based on the situation and available resources, and is divided into three distinct phases. These phases have been well-proven by TCCC-trained military personnel:

1.Direct threat care:Care that is rendered while under attack or in adverse conditions.

2.Indirect threat care:Care that is rendered while the threat has been suppressed, but may resurface at any point.

3.Evacuation:Care that is rendered while the casualty is being evacuated from the incident site.

TECC focuses on medical care during these phases and provides guidelines for managing trauma in the civilian tactical or hazardous environment. While TECC has a tactical slant, it takes an all-hazards approach to providing care outside the normal operating conditions of most EMS agencies, such as responding to a mass casualty or active shooter event.

Topics will include: Patient assessment, Tourniquets, Wound packing/trauma dressings, recovery position/chest seals/NPA, TECC guidelines, PACE methodology/IFAK equipment, direct/indirect threat movement/care.

There will be skills set stations throughout the day with scenario practicals towards the end of the day.

TECC guidelines are a set of medical guidelines for use during high-threat operations where there is ongoing risk to both the patient and the provider. TECC training provides medical guidance for those who may find themselves taking care of the injured during hostile, non-permissive, high-threat incidents.

Our TECC curriculum is developed from NAEMT’s Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) Committee based on guidelines from the Committee on Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (Co-TECC) and the Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) program.
