Legal Updates .5 Hours

Use of Force High Risk Traffic Stops 3.5 Hours (3.5 Hours scenario based)

 

 

 

Course Content: Using the state-of-the-art Use of Force simulator students will be exposed to training on the following topics. 

 

  • Use of force decision making and application as it pertains to conducting High Risk traffic stops
  • Applicable case law concerning officer’s use of force
  • Use of force documentation and report writing strategies

The simulator offers the opportunity for officers to react to scenarios using verbal commands and officer presence, OC spray, Taser, and firearms.  Officers will be exposed to multiple traffic stop scenarios through the course of the class and will have the opportunity to watch other officers handle scenarios and be able to offer input on tactics.  This is a very interactive training environment.  Upon completion of a scenario officers may be asked to provide a brief narrative about what happened in order to address potential areas of improvement in their use of force documentation.

 

The Safe-T-Act took effect July 1, 2022 and provides minimum in-service training requirements. Every three years a permanent police officer must satisfactorily complete Use of Force training, which shall include 12 hours of scenario based Training, with 6 hours focused on High Risk Traffic Stops.

 

Officers are required to bring duty belts, but NO FIREARMS, AMMUNITION, OC or TASERS will be allowed in the classroom.  There is a limit of 10 students per session.

 

The course takes place in the lower level of Sauk Valley College.  Officers should park in the East Parking lot and Enter through the front facing Dillon lobby Entrance then wait for the instructor to escort them to the Simulator room.
